Bird Song and Music

The origin of human music has long been the subject of intense discussion amongst philosophers, cultural scientists and naturalists. We use a combination of bioacoustics and musicological methods to explore the formal similarities between bird song and music. Which aspects of bird song appear to human listeners as particularly musical? How and why are animal sounds used in human music? Can the structural similarities between bird song and music tell us something about the evolution of human music?
