Mechanisms of Vocal Production and Modulation
Song production in birds requires the coordinated control of the respiratory system, the vocal organ (the syrinx) and the upper vocal tract including the beak and pharynx. Our group is investigating how birds produce and adjust their vocal signals, and what physical and physiological factors may constrain their vocal communication. Using a variety of physiological and anatomical techniques we hope to more fully understand how vocal production mechanisms influence the vocal signals of birds and affect their ability to adapt to changes in their environment.
