Next step in the planning competition for the Max Planck Campus Martinsried

Members of the jury meet for the first time

March 06, 2025

There is still no visible sign of the new Max Planck Campus, which will be built on the site of the two institutes in Martinsried. In the background, however, preparations are in full swing. After architectural firms were able to apply to participate in the planning competition over the past few months by submitting evidence and references for a variety of criteria, the members of the jury are now convening on the campus site.

Since the announcement of the general planning competition in mid-December 2024, planning teams from all over the world have been able to apply to take part in the competition for the new Max Planck Campus in Martinsried. On March 6, 2025, the jury that will later evaluate the designs of the selected offices will meet for the first time. At the meeting on the Martinsried campus, the competition documents will be agreed upon. These documents contain all the information relevant to the planning task for the participating architectural firms and thus form the basis for the designs, among other things.

The jury is made up of both, specialist and non-specialist judges. The specialist judges are architects, urban planners and engineers, who will evaluate the subsequent designs from a technical point of view. The non-specialist judges are from the fields of politics, the Bavarian state government, the municipal level of the municipality of Planegg, and scientific representatives of the Max Planck Society and the institutes.

The new campus will house the two institutes in a shared building structure: the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry and the Max Planck Institute for Biological Intelligence. The aim is to create a future-oriented campus that meets the high demands of cutting-edge scientific research, sustainability and social factors. The decision of the competition jury is expected to be made at the end of 2025.
